Plastiki Expedition

When people have good ideas, those ideas somehow connect good people no matter where they are. We met David de Rothschild, founder of Adventure Ecology, in San Francisco when we began planning MaGiC. His commitment to the environment has sent him on adventures to some of the world’s most remote and fragile regions, most recently on his Plastiki Expedition – the inspiration for MaGiC!

On March 20th, 2010, David de Rothschild and his crew set sail from San Francisco on the Plastiki – a boat he and his team made from roughly 12,000 plastic bottles and other recycled plastic material. The 20-meter catamaran craft, powered by renewable sources including wind, solar, and wave energy, will be his home and that of his crew during their transpacific voyage from San Francisco to Sydney. Pretty amazing, huh? But that’s not all: his mission on this journey is to raise awareness about post-consumer waste, the importance of reuse and the garbage patches in the Pacific that can reach the size of Mongolia!

Check out the most recent video updates, including his recent visit to beautiful Christmas Island, on Flickr!

His adventure will help all of us to envision waste as a resource, to understand that there is no “away” because what we throw away always ends up somewhere else, and to see that nothing is impossible!

The Plastiki is hoping to reach Sydney by July – which will coincide with the start of this year’s MaGiC Experience!

We will follow his updates through to Sydney and make sure you know what is going on!
